Lindsay Sperling’s Top 10 TV Shows Of 2014

Every year television amazes me. Unlike its big sister, film, networks can't rely on one or two projects to carry them all year. They have to constantly reinvent themselves to keep up with the change in trends. Even when it comes to adapting material to the small screen, they have the daunting task of using the source material as a launching point instead of the entire creative arsenal. From more traditional September to May seasons, to summer series, to split seasons, to new outlets and methods of delivery, TV shows have proven to have staying power - and 2014 has brought more in all the aforementioned categories than ever before.

House of Lies is typically a pretty risqué show, but this year it offered viewers the most intense season yet.

The team configuration took a significant turn this year, but when everything shook out, the four-man unit was reunited just in time for everything to fall apart. The season ended on an expressive note as Marty was forced to hand his company over to Jeannie in order to avoid federal prosecution, ending both their professional and personal relationship, for the moment.

House of Lies encapsulates the complexities of mixing business with pleasure and takes it to another level. Marty Kaan and Associates brought fans the best clients that the show has offered so far. Although, there’s always an interesting grouping, and with that, an interesting mix of new characters.

Rapper T.I. became one of the most fascinating parts of the season, guest starring in a multi-episode arc as a former gangster turned fashion mogul reluctantly branching out at his partners’ insistence. His interactions with Jeannie in particular pushed the narrative in a different direction, presenting the characters as heightened versions of themselves.

Next season has the potential to outshine the previous ones, too, as the writers come up with another creative way to reunite Marty and Jeannie. It’s hard to fathom how they would come back from this major act of betrayal, but it’ll be a lot of fun to watch them try.
