Legendary’s MonsterVerse rampages onto TV in first trailer for Netflix’s ‘Skull Island’

And there's a lot of monsters!

If you think the DC Extended Universe was having trouble staying afloat as a serialized throughline, you can imagine just how many oxygen tanks the MonsterVerse has gone through at this point. Sure, the Kongs and Godzillas of the mid-2010s up until now have been perfectly fine movies, and even connect in a semi-okay manner, but let’s face it; no cinematic universe stands a chance at rivaling Godzilla: Final Wars, especially when your first Godzilla movie was criticized for not having enough Godzilla in it.

That being said, the MonsterVerse is still a more than effective sign-up sheet for some kaiju shenanigans, and the fact that they’re getting a bit braver with their mediums makes things all the more refreshing. Indeed, the MonsterVerse’s next venture will take the form of an animated television series, namely Skull Island; the upcoming Netflix exclusive that launched its first trailer earlier today.

It looks like those Godzilla criticism were taken to heart, because this trailer is absolutely rife with some awe-inspiring and equally terrifying entities, ranging from a giant cephalopod, to a house-sized crab, to eagles that probably hunt elephants for sport. And, of course, you don’t include Skull Island in any property without paying the proper respects to the eighth wonder of the world himself.

Skull Island follows the plight of eight shipwrecked humans who wash up on Skull Island, where some giant, prehistoric problems start popping up at a rapid pace.

The series will release to Netflix on June 22.
