The definition of insanity is so well-known at this point that it’s basically a meme, but 1899 creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are clearly happy to go where the money is by re-upping their development deal with Netflix not long after the ambitious fantasy was canceled, and they’re diving right back into a very similar sandbox.
Of course, we should point out that the duo are also the masterminds behind Dark, which has got to be regarded as one of the streaming service’s finest-ever original shows, but they couldn’t hide their disappointment when 1899 bit the dust. Not that anyone should have been surprised, when it became the 25th effects-heavy genre show in three years to bite the dust.
However, there’s reason to get excited about their next project, because it also happens to be a horror that’s adapted from a comic book. In fact, Mike Flanagan was attached to Something is Killing the Children at one stage, which obviously won’t be the case anymore after he departed Netflix in favor of rivals Prime Video.
Set in the eerie Archer’s Peak, children begin to missing with alarming regularity, and the scant few who return bring with them terrible tales of monsters that dwell in the shadows. Enter a mysterious stranger with a badass name, as Erica Slaughter shows up on the scene to take care of the townsfolk’s problem.
To be frank, that sounds awesome, and let’s hope it fares more like Dark and less like 1989, although Odar Friese’s rumored eight-figure contract will certainly help them overcome their recent setback.
