It’s been revealed at D23 that Kat Dennings will be returning to the MCU in the upcoming Disney Plus series WandaVision. Dennings will reprise her role as Darcy Lewis from Thor and Thor: The Dark World, who assists Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster while gradually taking on more responsibility as a character. We’ve already seen some glimpses of WandaVision from D23, courtesy of a recently leaked Phase 4 trailer, as well as other exciting announcements about Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight TV shows for the new streaming service, and more is sure to come.
The return of Dennings adds to what we know so far about WandaVision though, which will focus on Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and her relationship with Paul Bettany’s Vision. We’ll also get to see Teyonah Parris as an older version of Monica Rambeau from Captain Marvel, with the series taking place after Avengers: Endgame.
Furthermore, events in WandaVision will link up with the Phase 4 movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and will also explain how Maximoff received the name Scarlet Witch. Intrigued yet?
We’re currently not sure how Dennings’ Darcy will fit into the plot of WandaVision, although the series’ reported emphasis on a 1950s-sitcom feel makes sense if you think about the actress’s success in comedies like 2 Broke Girls. The wisecracking Darcy would certainly work as part of a dysfunctional family unit, regardless of whether the show is set in the 1950s itself, or takes places in a reality created by Scarlet Witch’s reality-warping powers.
A mix of sci-fi, magic and comedy in WandaVision would certainly align with the tone of the Thor films and Darcy’s character, while she could also act as a wisecracking foil to fellow returning MCU actor Randall Park (playing FBI agent Jimmy Woo), who’ll feature alongside new additions to the franchise like Kathryn Hahn.
WandaVision is set for a release in Spring 2021 on Disney Plus, so expect plenty more news on the series before then.
