If I thought I was excited for Gotham‘s fifth and final season before today, man, was I ever wrong. Granted, there were some fine promos that hit the web in recent weeks, but Fox’s latest offering is enough to give one goosebumps.
At the top of this article, you’ll find a full movie-style trailer clocking in at over four minutes in length teasing what’s to come in the next few weeks. There are scenes from past seasons included, sure, but those are there to illustrate the arcs experienced by some of the longstanding characters.
Of course, Bruce Wayne is front and center because, after all, he’s going to become Batman before the series wraps. Still, the various villains are given ample screentime as well. And in all honesty, they should be, for the Caped Crusader lays claim to what’s arguably the greatest rogues gallery in all of comics.
Speaking of which, it’s hard to touch on that subject without mentioning one Jeremiah Valeska. It wasn’t that long ago when we were treated to character portraits showing him as a full-on Joker, and it looks like a showdown with Bruce at Ace Chemicals may very well serve as the final element needed to complete his origin story. Either way, it looks like Cameron Monaghan’s best performances are still to come.
On that note, it’s worth mentioning that Jeremiah’s not-Harley Quinn, Ecco, can also be spotted in the footage provided. Interestingly enough, she refers to him as “Puddin'” at one point, so I’m thinking she really is the closest the producers can get to incorporating the Clown Princess of Crime into their saga.
In addition to other returning favorites like Mad Hatter and Scarecrow, we’re also given more teasers concerning the new bruiser in town, Bane. I’m thrilled to finally see him simply as Eduardo Dorrance, too, and get hints at his past history with Jim Gordon. But when it comes to the Bane persona, though, it looks like Hugo Strange gives him help in that department.
As for what else will go down in the premiere episode, “Year Zero,” it’s recommended that you check out the synopsis below:
Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) face the chaos Gotham City has become. Their mission to keep the city safe becomes more complicated, as the villains who survived the attack on the city begin to resurface and claim various territories. Meanwhile, Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) grapples with how to deal with her uncertain future.
Gotham returns for its fifth season on Thursday, January 3rd on Fox.
