With Supergirl now having fully transitioned to The CW, it really seems like news concerning the series doesn’t stop. We’re certainly not complaining, either, as the show looks like it’s about to soar into the stratosphere.
Now, it’s nothing new for movies or TV shows to take liberties with the source material. As characters and storylines develop, course corrections are often made to what just feels “right” for this particular iteration. Supergirl itself has already done this by revealing that DEO director Hank Henshaw is, in fact, J’onn J’onzz/The Martian Manhunter.
It’s time for fans to get ready for another major change to the mythos as well, because executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently dropped this bomb:
“James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to decide to become a vigilante, and he’s going to become Guardian, complete with the shield.”
As you can surmise, The Guardian is a flesh and blood superhero without powers and some form of the character has been around since 1941, most recently popularized by the beloved animated series, Young Justice. What’s kind of funny is that this was the persona many fans thought John Diggle would adopt over on Arrow, but they ultimately settled on the codename of “Spartan.”
It’s quite obvious that the shift to The CW opens up more comic book influenced possibilities than over on CBS, which Kreisberg pretty much admits:
“James becoming Guardian was definitely one of the things that changed when we were going to [The CW].”
As can be expected, this will cause some friction between James and Kara:
“Now there’s this new masked vigilante, and she has her own feelings about vigilantes, and it becomes a push and pull about who gets to decide who gets to be a hero.”
For those unfamiliar with comics, Olsen taking on another guise is nothing new. From the start, I thought actor Mehcad Brooks looked more like a buff superhero rather than a dorky photographer, so I find it more fitting that he become The Guardian as opposed to Elastic Lad or Turtle Boy.
