Fans were shocked yesterday when it was announced that Marvel and Netflix had cancelled Iron Fist after just two seasons. What made it so surprising is that this marks the first time one of the collaborations between the superhero behemoth and the streaming service has been axed (The Defenders hasn’t been officially canned, remember). Not to mention that the second season was so much better than the lackluster first.
Nevertheless, it’s the end of the road for the immortal Iron Fist (protector of K’un-Lun, sworn enemy of the Hand), and to mark the ending of the show, Danny Rand himself, Finn Jones, took to Instagram to release a touching statement in which he honored his time on the series. He also posted the message alongside a promo image of him in character, which reminds us that Danny still lives on.
“[W]ith every end is a new beginning. I have an enormous amount of love and respect for everyone involved with the last two seasons of this show. Defending the greatest city in the world amongst the most talented and warmest people has been a privilege and a joy. Blessed to have taken this journey and grateful for the ongoing support.”
Note that Jones’ statement speaks about the end of Iron Fist the show but doesn’t mention anything about him saying goodbye to Iron Fist the character. Seeing how interconnected the Marvel/Netflix series are, we’d be very surprised if he never turns up again. The most likely home for him now that his own vehicle is over is Luke Cage, as their comic book-accurate Heroes for Hire team-up was hinted at in season 2, but we’ll have to see what the House of Ideas has planned for him.
Alternatively, after the news of Iron Fist‘s cancellation, many fans had the same reaction, saying that it was time for Marvel and Netflix to make a Daughters of the Dragon spinoff for Misty and Colleen. If the studios listen to the public and actually make that happen, then maybe Jones can show up in that as well?
Either way, next up from this corner of the MCU is Daredevil season 3, arriving this coming Friday on the streaming site.
