Luther fans, rejoice! Idris Elba’s gruff detective will put on the signature tweed coat once again for what the BBC is billing as an “utterly heart-stopping and unmissable” four-part season, coming soon.
That’s right, a new run of Luther is on the way and it’ll signal John Luther’s first appearance on our screens since December of 2015. True, Elba slipped back into the role of the iconic sleuth for a Sport Relief sketch at one point, but with the show’s co-creator and writer Neil Cross also on board, fans will no doubt be looking forward to this all-new fifth installment with bated breath.
Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on when it may premiere, but earlier today the BBC unveiled the first footage from season 5 and you can give it a watch up above. It doesn’t offer a whole lot, but we do see Luther in a bit of a sticky situation with a gangster who goes by the name George Cornelius. He’s trying to find out what happened to his son, pressing the detective for information. But it isn’t long before our hero turns the tables and gains the upper hand.
Overall, it’s a thrilling but all too brief look at what’s in store. With any luck, though, it signals the start of the marketing campaign and we should be getting more soon. Presumably, the new season will be premiering in early 2019, but again, the BBC hasn’t announced anything official just yet.
Last we saw of DSI John Luther though, he was tackling crime opposite DS Emma Lane (Rose Leslie), but with no word on casting, the jury’s still out on who will join Idris Elba for the next run. Maybe we’ll be treated to the return of Ruth Wilson’s chilling Alice? We’ll have to wait and see, but as soon as more on Luther season 5 emerges, we’ll be sure to let you know.
