Though the Super Bowl is mainly about the football game, it’s also a tremendous advertising opportunity. For years, movie studios have snuck 30-second advertisements for their hottest (and not so hot) properties between the multi-million dollar game. But television is now ready to compete with the big boys. Netflix announced earlier today that they’ll show their first Stranger Things season 2 trailer during the game and now, Hulu has unveiled the Super Bowl teaser for The Handmaid’s Tale, their warmly-anticipated Margaret Atwood adaptation of the same name.
While this TV spot doesn’t tell us more than the first trailer did last month, it’s nevertheless an unnerving, suspenseful tease for the Elisabeth Moss-starring miniseries. Those who are familiar with the book won’t find anything they don’t know here, but for those left in the dark, it’s intriguing, to say the least.
The teaser is as stylish as it’s bleak and mournful, and it’s hard to tell if that’s going to appeal to the nacho-munching, beer-guzzling, group-distracted crowd that’s going to watch it on Sunday night. My point is, the Super Bowl may not be the most ideal audience for this one, but Hulu is certainly confident if they’re spending the money to put it on during the biggest football game of 2017. Hopefully, the miniseries itself is worthy of such anticipation and eagerness.
The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 26 and co-stars Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd and O-T Fagbenle. Check out the teaser above and let us know if it piques your interest.
