The 2023 Emmy Awards are recognizing a host of brilliant TV shows from last year, but social media believes that one fantasy series is getting the shorter end of the stick despite its merits.
House of the Dragon was the long-anticipated prequel to Game of Thrones that premiered on HBO last year, and though it didn’t turn out to be as sensational as its predecessor in this age of content frenzy, the show still managed to satisfy long-time fans of Westeros and even garner acclaim in certain areas.
One of these areas was the brilliant cast, most notably Paddy Considine (King Viserys), Milly Alcock, and Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), and Matt Smith as the Rogue Prince. But not to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, apparently, because the acting pool hasn’t been nominated in a single category.
How do you even forget such a brilliant performance as the one Emma D’Arcy delivered in the season 1 finale?
Paddy Considine gave the performance of a lifetime as Viserys, yet there’s not even a mention of him in the nominations list.
Even the official Song of Ice and Fire pages are reacting to this absurd development.
Granted, the series has been nominated in 8 production categories, but how is it that not even one of the actors made the list?
Perhaps the Academy thought that between The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, and House of the Dragon, they would’ve had to give every nomination to HBO, so they decided to downplay the Westerosi successor to balance it out. Still, I guess fans can look for some measure of consolation in the fact that House of the Dragon still managed to beat its biggest rival.
