The third season of Stranger Things dropped on Netflix last Thursday, so odds are you’re already finished with it. Now that it’s over though, what’s there left to watch on the streaming service? Well, We Got This Covered has…got you covered.
Here are six shows worth binging once you return from the Upside Down:
The OA
As far as premises go, The OA is arguably the closest series on this list to matching the WTF vibes of Stranger Things. Its plot follows Prairie Johnson, a young blind woman who returns from a seven-year disappearance with strange new abilities, including the capability to see again. Brit Marling, who portrays Prairie, also serves as the creator and executive producer, and Sound of My Voice director Zal Batmanglij helms every episode in its two seasons, giving The OA a distinct, controlled feel.
Sense8
Sense8 was unceremoniously cancelled after only two seasons, but its fanbase has been very vocal in its support. Created by the Wachowskis, who themselves are responsible for The Matrix, the show follows eight individuals who are connected through some sort of supernatural bridge – not unlike the force connection between Kylo Ren and Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi – as they try to escape a mysterious organization that’s trying to hunt them down. Be sure to check this out if you really liked the “The Other Girl” episode of Stranger Things season 2, but be warned, Sense8 ends on a cliffhanger
Black Mirror
It’s a pretty safe bet to assume you’ve heard of Black Mirror by now. The BBC-turned-Netflix anthology series focuses on the horrific (and often humorous) over-reliance society places on technology. Yet, it’s more than the television equivalent of an old man shouting at the younger generation, as more often than not, the real villains of Black Mirror are the human characters at its core. If you liked the darker elements of Stranger Things, this may be the show for you.
Season 5 of the hit series dropped on Netflix earlier this summer, and the streaming service gifted us a Choose Your Own Adventure style feature length episode last Christmas, which are both great places to pick up for a first time viewer.
GLOW
GLOW follows the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, a women’s professional wrestling promotion that must navigate the day-glo aesthetic and inherent sexism of the 1980s. Starring Alison Brie and Marc Maron, the series humorously examines the zeitgeist of the time period, not unlike the latest, mall-centric season of Stranger Things. Hurry and catch up on all of the episodes available now though, because the next season of GLOW is coming to Netflix in a month.
Dark
If, for some reason, you wish Strangers Things felt less like a Spielberg film and more like a Nicolas Winding Refn drama, then Dark is the show for you. The 2017 German-language supernatural series kicks off with a child’s disappearance before eventually revealing a crazy, time-traveling conspiracy that’s affected three generations of four estranged families. Equal parts crime thriller, family drama, and science fiction horror, Dark is 18-hours worth of episodes that will have you thinking long after it’s over.
Sex Education
Sex Education is almost the exact opposite of Dark; a show for the Stranger Things fans that wish it had less inter-dimensional monsters and more high school hijinx. The British comedy follows Otis, the son of a sex therapist, and his rebellious friend Maeve as they create a makeshift clinic for the school’s sexually confused and frustrated students. It’s worth pointing out that co-star Gillian Anderson brings her ever appreciated geek credentials to this series, which was recently renewed for a second season.
