Henry Winkler has revealed that he needed a new pair of underwear after filming a scene in the penultimate episode of Barry. Winkler, who portrayed the character of Gene Cousineau across all four seasons of the HBO black comedy, spoke of the season four episode a nice meal during a recent interview with Variety.
The scene in question features Winkler alongside Robert Wisdom, who plays Jim Moss. The episode reveals that Cousineau has been duped by an actor posing as a Hollywood agent, a storyline tense enough to make Winkler “change my underwear.” He continued: “Robert is so powerful that you know you’re making a television show, and he looks at you, and I’m telling you, I had to change my underwear.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Winkler spoke of the time jump that occurred earlier on in Barry’s fourth season, saying he learned from the eight-year flash-forward that he must “go where [the writers] take us.” Bill Hader, who stars as the titular assassin, said himself that the time jump is “more interesting” than following Barry on the run in real time, since it “was more about them being there.”
a nice meal is the second-last episode of Barry, which will air its series finale on May 28. Speaking recently of the show’s imminent conclusion, Stephen Root, who plays Monroe Fuches, said he was happy with how Barry reaches its end. “It was satisfying to me, that it’s gonna end the way it ends. I was happy with the resolution of the main characters, and there’s a nice surprise at the end.”
Barry’s final season has included cameo appearances from The Shape of Water, director Guillermo del Toro and CODA director Sian Heder, with Jon Hamm, Vanessa Bayer and Fred Armisen elsewhere appearing across the show’s four-season run. Winkler had previously remained coy about whether Barry would continue beyond season four.
