One of the most talked and tweeted about series in cable television history, if not the most watched series, Game of Thrones, returns next spring with 10 all new episodes. Over the weekend HBO rolled out a trailer for the new season intended to stoke the fan flame for the new season in April.
The trailer reveals new characters and catches up on a few lingering story threads as it intrigues fans for the new season. Mostly, it’s a lot of darkly lit, handsome people looking forlorn or pensive; but that’s a non-fan’s perspective.
Fans will recall that season one came to an end in the wake of the chaotic execution of Sean Bean’s Ned. Fans went into frenzy over Ned’s execution, a remarkable moment of television as never before had a series murdered its ostensible lead actor. The furor of Ned’s death surprised many as it had been tipped off in the bestselling books, on which the show is based, by George R.R Martin.
The new season will pick up in the immediate wake of the finale, which included the death of another of the series’ breakout characters, Jason Mamoa’s Khal Drogo. The new season two trailer features Drogo’s wife Daenarys (Emilia Clarke) rising from within the flames of Drogo’s funeral pyre with a small dragon on her back in the trailer’s most striking visual.
Game of Thrones won a pair of Emmys in 2011, including Best Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage who will return to the role of Tyrion in season two. That said, with the penchant that show-runners David Benioff and D.B Weiss have for killing off main characters, we’ll have to wait and see just how long the Emmy winner stays with the show, or read George R.R Martin’s books.
Game of Thrones returns Sunday, April 15th 2012 on HBO.
