Game Of Thrones Finale Submitted For Best Writing Emmy

Apparently, HBO felt that Game of Thrones' final episode was good enough to be submitted for an Outstanding Writing Emmy Award.

The last month has been filled with highs and lows for Game of Thrones fans. Back in May, the series finale for HBO’s fantasy drama was released, and while some were satisfied with how creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wrapped things up, plenty of longtime viewers were left disappointed with how the ending panned out. In a show which featured dozens of characters and plotlines, it’s not entirely surprising that some long-hanging stories wouldn’t get the conclusions they deserve, but this realization doesn’t make the sting any more palatable.

For better or worse, HBO made the much-maligned decision to shorten its final two seasons, which brought the total episode count down to 13 from 20. It’s not entirely clear what the reasoning behind this was, but some fans speculate that Benioff and Weiss were eager to end the show as quickly as possible in order to focus on their upcoming Star Wars trilogy.

Needless to say, a few of us here at We Got This Covered were thoroughly disappointed with the final batch of episodes, which really dropped the ball when it came to storytelling, pacing, and characterization. However, it seems some of the execs at HBO have an entirely different opinion on the matter.

As reported by SuperHeroHype, the network submitted the final episode, “The Iron Throne,” for consideration in the Outstanding Writing category for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. When it comes to Directing for a Drama Series, HBO submitted a total of three episodes – “The Last of the Starks,” “The Long Night,” and the show’s finale.

Personally, we’d be thoroughly surprised if Game of Thrones took home any awards for Outstanding Drama series or Writing, though we wouldn’t be remiss if it received accolades for its production (makeup, costumes, etc.) In any case, with the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards set to take place in mid-September, we won’t have to wait too long to see how things shake out.
