Much like Avengers: Infinity War before it, there’s a sense of finality swirling around Game of Thrones season 8.
It is, after all, the six-part finale to one of HBO’s greatest ever shows, so it’s small wonder why the entire fanbase is currently walking on eggshells in anticipation of Thrones‘ return next April. Filming continues apace across parts of Northern Ireland, Iceland, and Seville, which typically doubles as a real-life location for King’s Landing and its Colosseum-like arena, the Dragonpit.
And just like Infinity War, the Powers That Be over at HBO are going the extra mile to ensure season 8’s biggest secrets remain locked away in the Iron Bank, including deleting every script, Mission: Impossible style, as soon as the actors have completed a scene. That’s according to Jaime Lannister himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who spoke to Elite Daily (h/t Screen Rant) about the show’s forthcoming swan song.
While attending last month’s Cannes Film Festival, the Thrones mainstay spoke at length about the “crazy” amount of secrecy surrounding HBO’s fantasy flagship, and how scripts tend to “vanish” on set.
They’re very very strict. It’s reached a crazy level this year. We actually get the scripts, and then when we’ve shot the scene — and we only have it digitally — and then when you’ve done the scene, it just vanishes. It’s like Mission: Impossible. ‘This will self-destruct.’
The eighth and final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones has been penciled in for a release next April, by which point we should have a better understanding of how showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss plan to bring the curtain down on what has been one of the most engrossing fantasy dramas, well, ever.
