Casting on FX’s Mayans MC pilot is really beginning to heat up, what with Edward James Olmos, John Ortiz, Antonio Jaramillo, Clayton Cardenas and American Crime standout Richard Cabral all on board to star.
A spinoff to the Sons of Anarchy saga – it takes place soon after that heart-wrenching season 7 finale, nixing rumors that FX was actually rustling up a prequel – and we now have word that Mayans MC has located its female lead: Irish actress Sarah Bolger. Deadline has the scoop, confirming that the Into the Badlands star has landed the role of Emily, the “beautiful ‘guera’ [Mexican slang for ‘white girl’, or ‘light-haired girl’] next door and childhood sweetheart of EZ. But when Romeo departed, this Juliet didn’t unsheathe the dagger; she traded it in for diamond studs and a mansion on the hill.”
Bolger has signed on just in time, too, given production is expected to commence in the coming weeks. Should FX order Mayans MC to series, the Kurt Sutter and Elgin James will likely screech onto the small screen sometime this fall, but we’re still awaiting confirmation on that front.
Here’s the show’s official logline:
Set in the aftermath of Jax Teller’s death at the end of SOA’s seven-season run in 2014, Mayans MC will focus on the struggles of Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border. EZ is the gifted son of a proud Latino family, whose American dream was snuffed out by cartel violence. Now, his need for vengeance drives him toward a life he never intended and can never escape.
Also known for her performances across Once Upon A Time and The Tudors, Sarah Bolger is an exciting addition to the Mayans MC cast, and will no doubt bring a sense of nuance to Sutter’s ensemble.
