We can pretty much put two and two together at this point.

James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe by way of his “Gods and Monsters” arc is slowly beginning to take shape. The first project to debut under Gunn’s leadership, Creature Commandos, may officially have its first cast member, by way of The Purge: Anarchy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Frank Grillo.

While venting about how his Marvel Cinematic Universe character Crossbones was treated by the powers that be, Grillo also confirmed that he had jumped ship to DC. Seeing as the star has been feeding into rumors and speculation that he will be bringing life to Rick Flag Sr in Creature Commandos, we can more or less connect the dots and firmly assume that Grillo will be bringing life to one of the DCU’s first characters. He tells ComicBook:

“I think Crossbones serves a purpose, but I think the interesting thing is that if you see how many people around the world have responded to Crossbones, and again, he’s on the screen for a very f***ing short amount of time, I think there’s more there. I think there was more meat on the bone. I was disappointed, which is why I went over to DC.”

Grillo has been teasing his appearance in Creature Commandos since February, which will be Gunn’s DCU’s first project to land for the general public. It is an animated series which will also see the return of a familiar face from Gunn’s Suicide Squad.

While we may still be a ways off from the official start point of “Gods and Monsters,” we’re just a few short months away from The Flash, which may serve as the means of resetting the DC continuity. It arrives in theaters on June 16, 2023.
