Fox Close To Issuing A Greenlight For New Series Of The X-Files

Mulder and Scully's return to the small screen IS happening. Since Fox CEO Gary Newman dropped the news earlier this year that the network were toying with the notion of rekindling The X-Files with creator Chris Carter back at the helm. Add the show's leading stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson and all that's missing now is the official go-ahead from the network.

Mulder and Scully’s return to the small screen IS happening. Fox CEO Gary Newman dropped the news earlier this year that the network were rekindling The X-Files with creator Chris Carter back at the helm. Add in the show’s leading stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson and all that’s missing now is the official go-ahead from the network.

Two months have passed since that initial flurry of excitement and it seems the silence may have been worth it if a report from TV Wise is to be believed. According to the site, it’s only a matter of time before Fox announces the show, which might adopt a new format:

Fox is close to giving an official green-light to a revival of their iconic science fiction series, which originally aired between 1993 and 2002. Per sources, the network has settled on a “short-stack” order for the revival and while the exact size of the order is yet-to-be-determined, I’m told it will be less than ten episodes.

TV Wise asserts that further speculation from the Daily Mail suggesting the series will only roll out six episodes cannot be verified. Nevertheless, this doesn’t change earlier word from Duchovny, who hinted at a similar possibility. Back in January, he made his case for an abbreviated season that’s much more in line with a limited series:

“I’m assuming that it will happen sooner rather than later now. We’ll see what form, how many (episodes). Certainly I can’t nor would I be interested in doing a full season. It will be in some kind of limited form. We’re all old, we don’t have the energy for a full season.”

Old or not, Mulder’s quest for the truth will be continuing much sooner than expected.
