In its previous seasons, The Flash has played host to some rather memorable overarching villains. Already, we’ve become acquainted with formidable foes such as the Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Savitar and the Thinker. But soon enough, we’ll welcome the next major threat to Central City, that being Cicada.
So far, this fella has been shrouded by much mystery, but lead actor Grant Gustin thankfully spilled some beans while chatting with Entertainment Weekly, saying the following about his next onscreen nemesis:
“He can dampen other metahuman powers, and we don’t know at first how he’s able to do that. He’s got an edge that no other big bad has ever had. We don’t know who he is. He’s mysterious. He’s just kind of an intimidating, big scary man that can render pretty much all of these metahuman superheroes useless, more or less, in battle. He comes on really hard and fast the first time we meet him, so right away there’s an intimidation factor that’s through the roof, similar to Zoom.”
If indeed Cicada can make an impact out of the gate just as Zoom did, that’ll really be something. To be honest, Hunter Zolomon remains my favorite antagonist that the show has presented to date, so it’s cool to ponder the prospect of him getting a run for his money.
Adding more sizzle to the steak was executive producer and showrunner Todd Helbing, who said:
“The backstory that we created and sort of why he’s doing what he is doing this year is completely different, too. He’s more of a blue collar metahuman.”
In addition to Cicada, smaller threats are also expected to confound the STAR Labs crew, with the likes of Spin and Rag Doll already being confirmed. Now if we could just get Godspeed for season 6…
The Flash returns for its fifth season on Tuesday, October 9 on The CW.
