After Solo: A Star Wars Story tanked at the box office last year, a number of promising projects were reportedly put on ice over at Lucasfilm, including the much anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie. However, given that everyone in the Star Wars fanbase knows that striking down Luke’s beloved mentor only makes him more powerful than you can possibly imagine, it was always assumed that the fan favorite would find a way to make a return in the near future.
And tonight, after countless rumors and endless speculation, we can finally confirm that Ewan McGregor is now officially in talks to reprise his role as Obi-Wan for an upcoming Disney Plus TV series. From what we understand, it’ll be six or eight episodes and air exclusively on the streaming service. Details beyond that are hazy, but obviously, this is hugely exciting news and we imagine more will emerge at D23 next week.
While previous reports have pointed to Darth Maul appearing in the show as well, and the project even acting as a potential sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story, none of that’s been confirmed just yet. For now, all we know is that McGregor is in talks with Lucasfilm and we’re finally going to see him return to that galaxy far, far away.
Frankly, we’re sure that a lot of people were still holding out hope for a potential solo movie – we know we were – but Disney Plus is certainly a suitable place for the Jedi Master, and with six or eight episodes to explore whatever story the studio cooks up, we imagine that fans will be happy with the end product as it’ll give them substantially more time with the character than a film would have.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. At the moment, you can officially count McGregor in and start getting excited to see Obi-Wan Kenobi again in the not too distant future.
