It’s been a rough few days for fans of Netflix’s recently axed series The Punisher, and the real Slim Shady is not staying silent about it.
Eminem took to Twitter Wednesday night to call out the streaming service for pulling the plug on the hyper-violent comic book adaptation. In a short but effective Tweet, he wrote:
“DEAR @NETFLIX, REGARDING YOUR CANCELLATION OF THE PUNISHER, YOU ARE BLOWING IT!! SINCERELY, MARSHALL”
Netflix scrapped any future plans for The Punisher and Jessica Jones on Monday, a move many fans saw coming after the cancellation of their other Marvel properties, Iron Fist, Daredevil and Luke Cage, late last year. The series, which starred Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, the eponymous Punisher, had just released its second (and now final) season in January and it had gone down pretty well with both critics and fans alike. Upon its cancellation, Bernthal took to his own social media accounts to thank the show’s fans and those in the Armed Service for their support, describing the role as “an honor.”
Eminem has long publicized his love for Marvel Comics – appearing alongside Iron Man on a variant cover of a 2013 issue of Mighty Avengers and recording an original song for Sony’s Venom just last year. But Em’s ties with Frank Castle run even deeper, as the rapper co-headlined a limited edition Punisher comic back in 2009.
There may be a small glimpse of hope for Slim Shady on the horizon, however, as earlier this month, Marvel Television boss Jeph Loeb teased that many of the canceled Netflix series have a shot at coming back in some form down the road.
Will The Punisher or any of the other various Defenders series make a return on Disney Plus, then? All we can do is wait to find out, but with reports saying it might be two years before Marvel can use any of these characters again, don’t expect to see anything materialize soon.
