When Netflix formally announced plans to revive Konami’s beloved Castlevania franchise in the form of a two-part animated series, gamers were beside themselves with excitement.

This is, after all, one of the most iconic series in the industry’s history, and with producer Adi Shankar (Dredd) promising a “super violent” show designed to “flip the vampire sub-genre on its head,” it’s small wonder why Netflix’s Castlevania reboot has already generated so much interest online. Currently simmering in the bowels of development, the online streamer has confirmed plans to roll out the show’s first season later in 2017, and the suitably moody first poster has arrived to give us some clue as to what to expect from Shankar and Frederator Studios’ “dark, satirical” spin on the Belmont clan and their gruelling quest to slay the infamous Vlad Dracula Tepe.

Mining inspiration from Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, down below you’ll find an early peek at Dracula’s Castle set against a blood-red skyline. There are bats, there are impossibly large spires, and the whole package is an exciting, if chilling tease of what’s to come.

Per Netflix:

“Inspired by the classic video game series, “Castlevania” is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert, and Adi Shankar.”

Netflix’s animated spin on Castlevania will drop in two lots: the first batch of four, 30-minute episodes will swoop onto the digital platform in 2017, before a second installment is rolled out sometime next year.
