What would happen if women, teenage girls, in fact, had physical abilities that made them stronger than men? That’s what Prime’s upcoming series The Power delves into, following the lives of five individuals as they discover a new ability that seems to be appearing in teenage girls. Based on the award-winning book of the same name from British writer Naomi Alderman, the trailer for the series gives us an electrifying look into the start of a new world order.
The Power is a riveting contemplation on what it would look like if the tables were turned and women, all women, had the ability to physically intimidate. Following Alderman’s novel, the story begins with teenage girls across the globe suddenly experiencing an awakening as they discover they can generate and conduct electricity.
It is a power that comes from within them that is suddenly, without explanation unlocked. The girls quickly learn how to use, as well as abuse their power and are able to unlock it in older women as well until, eventually, all women across the world have this power at their fingertips and everything has changed.
Political powers scramble about as they try to contain the issue, but there is no containing it. In the trailer we see women fighting back against male threats and finding freedom in their newfound power with certain moments sending tingles up your spine. This story is not about a utopia where the world suddenly becomes fixed because women are stronger, as the trailer states, “power saves, power saves, power liberates.”
The series has a certain amount of star power behind it with Toni Collette (Hereditary) playing Margot Cleary-Lopez, the Mayor of Seattle and mother of three, John Leguizamo (The Menu) playing her husband, Rob, Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) her daughter, Jos, and Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan) as London mob boss, Bernie Monke.
The main cast also includes Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso), Ria Zmitrowicz (Three Girls), Halle Bush, Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman), and Nico Hiraga (Moxie), among others, with Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Rob Delaney (Catastrophe), Alice Eve (Star Trek Into Darkness) in recurring roles.
The series was developed by Raelle Tucker (Jessica Jones), Alderman, and Sarah Quintrell (Ellen) for Amazon Prime Video. It is significant for having an all-female writers’ room, with Quintrell also serving as co-executive producer and story consultant. The first season is expected to have nine episodes.
The Power will premiere on March, 31, on Amazon Prime Video.
