Peter Capaldi’s time wielding that iconic Sonic Screwdriver is coming to an end – look for that changeover to occur in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, “Twice Upon a Time – but already, the actor has weighed in on the possibility of one day reprising his role as the show’s Twelfth Doctor.
Chatting to Digital Spy, Capaldi admitted that he’d be game for a multi-Doctor storyline at some point in the future, but only if “the material was right.” Not only that, but the actor insists that he’d only consider signing on for a future appearance if it complemented the show – as opposed to treading on the toes of another Time Lord, such as the incoming Jodie Whittaker, whose casting has evoked nothing but praise from Capaldi.
Here’s what the Scottish star had to say when quizzed on a potential cameo:
I’m sure if it was right, if I thought the material was right, and it was the right time to do it. I love Doctor Who, so it’s great to be in it. But I think there comes a time… when you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go, and leave it behind and let it get on with itself. Maybe in some years’ time, I could pop up again. I’m quite happy to do that.
As Digital Spy points out, Doctor Who is due to celebrate its historic 60th anniversary in six years’ time, so perhaps the Powers That Be will open up the field for Peter Capaldi. It’s something we’re about to see in this year’s Christmas Special, “Twice Upon a Time,” which finds Capaldi’s Time Lord teaming up with the original Doctor, as played David Bradley.
The actor continued:
One doesn’t want to… it should never be a casual thing. It has to be special. That’s one of the things I love about Doctor Who – when it connects with its past, which it has an increasing amount of. When it touches its own past, it’s an electric moment. But if we all keep showing every season, it’s not!
Next up for Doctor Who is the premiere of “Twice Upon a Time” on December 25th, before Jodie Whittaker takes over for the show’s eleventh season ahead of its arrival late next year.
