7) The Two Doctors
Now, let’s get stuck into the good stuff.
For no other reason than nostalgia and the availability of the actors, 1985’s “The Two Doctors” saw Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor team up with Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor, alongside his companion Jamie (Frazer Hines) in an adventure featuring classic monsters the Sontarans filmed in sunny Seville, Spain.
By this time, fans were used to multi-Doctor stories not having the tightest of storylines – with the fun coming from watching the various Doctors interact, who cares if the plot isn’t so good? – but “The Two Doctors” definitely suffers from a narrative that’s lacking in focus. On the one hand, you have the Sontarans’ plot to steal the Time Lords’ secret of time travel. On the other, there’s the cannibalistic Androgums, and for one alarming episode of the 3 parter, the Second Doctor temporarily gets transformed into one.
There’s much fun to be had from seeing the impish, mischievous Second Doctor interact with the wholly different Sixth Doctor, who’s loud and arrogant, but there’s just too much strong competition for “The Two Doctors” to come any higher on this list.
