As 2018 nears its end, we’re on the verge of entering a crucial year for the Star Wars brand as Lucasfilm brings its current movie trilogy to a close with Star Wars: Episode IX while also making some important strides on the small screen. To prepare us for the big things to come, StarWars.com has released a cast list for Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian that confirms some previous reports while also offering some intriguing new names.
You may have already heard that Pedro Pascal will have a major role in the first ever live-action Star Wars TV series, and sure enough, it seems that the Narcos actor will be wearing the Boba Fett-style helmet as “a lone Mandalorian gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy.” As per previous announcements, he’ll be joined by the likes of Gina Carano (Deadpool) and Nick Nolte (Affliction), and better yet, it turns out that all the talk of Carl Weathers of Predator and Rocky fame joining the cast was right on the mark.
Rounding out the list is Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), and in perhaps the most curious addition of them all, legendary German director Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man).
As Carl Weathers’ character in Arrested Development would say, baby, we’ve got a stew going, and it’ll be interesting to learn in the coming months how Favreau and his team of directors are making use of this eclectic cast. The writer and executive producer himself has issued a statement summing up his thoughts on the squad he’s put together:
“We’re having a great time working with this incredibly talented group and excited for everyone to see what we’re up to.”
So, what exactly are they up to? Well, a recent rumor alleged that the story will see Pascal’s character fighting to save the life of a child he was sent to kill, but hopefully the studio will offer some official clarification before The Mandalorian arrives to Disney Plus in late 2019.
