The last decade has proved very interesting for the Merc with a Mouth. After making a brief (and frankly awful) appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool was thrust back into the limelight after development on a spinoff film began to take form. While Ryan Reynolds had been attached to the project since 2004, things didn’t really get off the ground until 2014, when leaked test footage convinced Fox to green-light the movie.
Having released in 2016, Deadpool shattered expectations set by skeptical critics and Hollywood executives. Produced on a meager budget of $58 million, the film went on to gross $783 million, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. Aside from its box office success, the pic was also a big hit with critics and fans alike, who praised its style, action sequences, faithfulness to the comics, and Reynolds’ performance. Deadpool 2, which released last year, saw similar success, outgrossing its predecessor by a few million dollars.
While Deadpool’s future looks bright on the big screen – Marvel recently confirmed that everybody’s favorite mercenary would be integrated into the MCU – his transition to the smaller screen has been met with a few bumps along the way. Although a Deadpool animated series was in development at FX – with Donald Glover serving as showrunner – the project was canceled last year, with Marvel deciding to take the franchise in a different direction.
All hope is not lost, though. As reported by ComicBook.com, creator Rob Liefeld took to Twitter to confirm that the Merc with a Mouth is still getting the animation treatment he deserves. Better yet, it seems fans won’t have to wait too long for the project to see the light of day.
“I know a Deadpool cartoon is coming. sooner than later,” Liefeld tweeted. “I live in Southern California, so I know things given the proximity to Hollywood. I have no idea if it’s any good or which version of Deadpool it portrays.”
That being said, there’s no release date in sight, and it doesn’t look like Marvel has any intention to pursue Donald Glover’s vision for the series.
