David Zaslav apparently wants to become public enemy number 1 as Warner Bros. pushes ‘Velma’ for awards season

There are better shows out there that deserve a nomination.

Say what you want about the HBO animated series, Velma. But there is no way you can convince me or anyone that it’s worthy of an award. Does Warner Bros. Discovery actually believe that there was gold to be found in this poorly-received series?

Warner Bros. TV shared a ‘for your consideration’ tweet, hoping that Velma will receive a nomination for the ‘Outstanding Animated Program’ category. Accompanying it was a quote from The Daily Beast, that claimed that it was “the perfect example” of how a franchise should adapt through the times. I would actually laugh if the Emmy or any other huge awards committee considered this show for a nomination.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Velma received an average critics score of 40 percent and a very low audience score of 7 percent. By comparison, people preferred watching Teen Titans Go!, which has an average audience score of 37 percent. Heck, Velma scored even lower than 2020’s ThunderCats Roar. That show received an average audience score of 18 percent, more than double what Velma received.

It seems like Warner Bros. doesn’t understand why people didn’t like this show. As someone who tried to watch it for just the story, it was just not worth sitting through. The characters are just stereotypes of one aspect of themselves, the dialogue was unbearable, and tried to convince us that all the mystery hunting started with Velma. Also, they removed Scooby-Doo, the mascot of the series. People also didn’t like how it tried to change the personalities of already-established characters.

We’re not saying Velma doesn’t deserve to be nominated. We’re just saying that there are other shows out there that not only performed better, but would be more deserving of a prestigious animation award. But if you believe that Velma deserves to be nominated, feel free to watch the series on Max.
