I want to believe. For the longest time, it looked set that the potential revival of The X-Files would never take that crucial last step in securing David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to return in their defining roles as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Now, all the moving parts are in place, and we’re on the verge of welcoming back TV’s extra-terrestrial sleuths for six all-new episodes.
But what of the future beyond those fabled six episodes? Duchovny and Anderson recently partook in an intimate interview with Variety, where the celebrated duo talked about the long path to transforming The X-Files revival from a pipe-dream to reality, and why they would sign on for new episodes without a second hesitation.
Firstly, Duchovny acknowledges that it took some time to get back into the swing of uncovering alien mysteries:
“We’re probably a little slower than we were, but we’re just trying to get it right. If there are only six (episodes), you can focus on those six, as opposed to trying to get 24 right. There were so many moving parts to get this thing together. By the time we did, it was late. That’s the only reason I think we’re doing six. I think we would’ve preferred to do eight or 10, but we all have other things (on our schedules).”
Extending The X-Files‘ return to include new episodes or perhaps an entirely new season will no doubt hinge on the viewing figures come premiere. It’s not for want of trying, either, considering that Fox has pumped out nine kinds of promos, posters, teasers and more to trumpet next week’s debut. Still, Anderson touched base on the possibility of adding new chapters to the story of Mulder and Scully.
“We would commit to new episodes right now, today, in advance of our launch. We are excited creatively by what we’ve seen. These episodes are incredibly consistent with the original series.”
We’re now within touching distance of The X-Files making a triumphant return to the airwaves, with a two-part premiere slated for Sunday, January 24 at 10:00 PM ET and Monday, January 25 at 8:00 PM ET. For more on its anticipated bow, check out our review.
