This year alone, the geek community has had to say their share of heartfelt goodbyes. Not only did Avengers: Endgame mark the end of an era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we’ve lost Game of Thrones, Gotham and iZombie on the TV side of things. And with the fall season fast approaching, we’ll soon be forced to let both Arrow and Supernatural go as well.
Staying with those two shows just mentioned, it’s very difficult not to reflect on all they’ve accomplished to this point. For those keeping score, Supernatural will call it quits after fifteen seasons, while Arrow is hanging up its leather hood after eight. Though the former lasted nearly twice as long as the latter, both amount to amazing runs.
That said, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that CW President Mark Pedowitz said the following while speaking at the recent TCA press event:
“We thought that the tribute special that appeared on Jane the Virgin this year was well-done. We’re planning tribute specials for Arrow, as well as Supernatural.”
Though we’d previously heard something about an Arrow retrospective, this is the first we’re learning about one for Supernatural. If so, let’s hope they’re decently comprehensive and entertaining to watch. Come to think of it, they’d probably make for nice supplemental material on future Blu-ray sets.
Actually, this isn’t the first time the network has whipped up something such as this for either series. In years prior, Arrow was granted a “Year One” special ahead of its sophomore season, with “A Very Special Supernatural Special” preceding its respective tenth. But since Oliver Queen and Sam and Dean Winchester have embarked on many more adventures in the time since, it doesn’t hurt to put together something else.
Right now, there’s no word on when these specials will air, though we’d expect for them to drop sometime ahead of the upcoming seasons. Speaking of which, Supernatural returns with new episodes on Thursday, October 10th on The CW, with Arrow bringing up the rear on Tuesday, October 15th.
