Well, it’s fair to say that none of us saw this coming!
During their panel at the Television Critics Association press tour today, Fox confirmed that comedy hits Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl will be getting a crossover episode this Fall. This is pretty much a dream come true for fans of the two shows, and we have no doubt that their quirky tones will end up working nicely together.
The one hour event takes place on Tuesday October 9th. Brooklyn Nine-Nine kicks things off at 8pm, with New Girl following at 8.30pm. We know that New Girl‘s Winston has joined the NYPD, so chances are that he will help facilitate this crossover. Seeing these characters meet has a ton of potential, though it’s fair to say that Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta and Zooey Deschanel’s Jessica Day sharing the small screen will be the biggest highlight to be found here.
Elizabeth Meriwether, creator and executive producer of New Girl, had this to say about the crossover plans in a statement today:
“The crossover episode has historically been the artistic high point of any show that has dared to attempt it. Maybe you remember ‘Blackout Thursday’ on NBC, or even further back the infamous ‘Alf’/‘Gilligan’s Island’ crossover of the late 1980s. New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s. We know we have big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone. There’s a 50% chance Alf will also be in both episodes. But there’s also a 50% chance that is a lie.”
Outside of the superhero genre, TV crossovers are something of a rarity these days (Bones/Sleepy Hollow and The Simpsons/Family Guy are some other examples though). As a result, seeing the worlds of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl collide should be good fun for fans of both series.
