Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has finally been made available to stream on Disney Plus, just in time before the 2023 Oscar Awards. The film received five nominations, with Angela Bassett in line to win Best Supporting Actress. But with all this award season hype happening, fans shouldn’t forget another award-winning show that will drop on Disney Plus on the same day.
Season two of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder also drops on the same day as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The show continues from where it left off in season one and shares more stories of the Proud family. All 10 new episodes are now available to stream and have received four nominations for a variety of awards.
While there is hype for the MCU to finally receive recognition from the Academy, it is also important to acknowledge the achievements that The Proud Family and other shows. The original Proud Family series was praised for its positive representation of a “black suburban family” and how it was able to resonate with African-American culture.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a good film and it definitely deserves the recognition that it currently received. But it is also important to recognize other titles, especially those done through animation. Last year Oscar awards downplayed the impact that animation had. This led to both Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse producers releasing an open letter, demanding Hollywood to give more support to the medium and not see it as something that “kids enjoy and adults have to endure.”
