It looks like Tom Holland can act the living Peter Parker out of every scene if you know how to give him directions, and The Crowded Room on Apple TV+ is ironically giving the British thespian that extra room to show off the full range of his acting talent.
As you can see in this newly released trailer, Holland is teaming up with Amanda Seyfried to bring a new psychological thriller to life. The Crowded Room is a mini-series inspired by the 1981 non-fiction novel, The Minds of Billy Milligan, which depicts the first case in United States judicial history where the defendant was acquitted by pleading dissociative identity disorder.
The Crowded Room seems to center predominantly on its two lead actors, Holland and Seyfried, and if this trailer alone is anything to go by, they seem to share an incredible on-screen chemistry.
According to the official synopsis released by Apple TV, The Crowded Room is going to play all sorts of mind tricks and storytelling sleights of hand on the audience.
“The Crowded Room follows Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland), a man who is arrested following his involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979. A captivating thriller told through a series of interviews with curious interrogator Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried), Danny’s life story unfolds, revealing elements of the mysterious past that shaped him, and the twists and turns that will lead him to a life-altering revelation.”
Barring the hit-and-miss nature of these streaming thrillers that we’ve grown wary of — and rightly so — I think this could be a major opportunity for Holland to escape being type-cast as one of Hollywood’s innumerable action heroes that lose their relevance after appearing in increasingly mediocre movies in just a short span of time.
The actor has so far only had the opportunity to showcase his acting chops in the MCU, and Sony’s live-action adaptation of Uncharted, which is why The Crowded Room could be a game-changing career moment. In fact, if the writing in this mini-series is half as good as the trailer hypes it up to be, Holland might well be on his way to earning that first Emmy nomination this year.
