Something that recently caused many of us to breathe a sigh of relief was finding out that Katie Cassidy signed a landmark deal, effectively making her a series regular on all DC TV series on The CW; not just on Arrow, but on The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as well. Those who may not be up to speed on the latest news may be asking, “Isn’t the Laurel Lance character dead?”
The beauty of comic book TV – much like the medium that spawned it – is that characters can be resurrected via convoluted means. It’s already common knowledge that Cassidy will appear in Arrow’s season premiere, but that will likely come in the form of a flashback.
Before I get too ahead of myself, allow me to provide this quote from executive producer Wendy Mericle, who not only recently confirmed in an interview with TV Guide that Black Canary is indeed returning to the land of the living, but also disclosed when to expect it:
“I can tell you that we’re really excited about having her back. You will see in the episodes where she appears – Episode 510 definitely, our midseason premiere. Keep your eyes out for that. We’re so excited about getting to work with her again and her willingness to come back. It’s one of the fun parts of the show. People can leave and get killed and you can still find new and crazy ways for them to come back. I can definitely tell you that there’s a way we’re going to bring her back and she’s going to be alive and well. And Flashpoint might have a little bit to do with that.”
There you have it. Those who have spent the summer theorizing that The Flash’s “Flashpoint” premiere event will play a vital role in her respawning have now found some form of validation – and the rest of us have one more reason to geek out over the coming year of DC TV.
Arrow returns for its fifth season on Wednesday, October 5 on The CW.
