Netflix might be the world’s biggest streaming giant, with a handful of highly successful original series to its name, but the world’s biggest marketplace, Amazon, is making a play for the title. Amazon Studios has been steadily building its unique catalogue with recent hits such as Transparent and Alpha House. While their output has yet to harness the hysterical levels of interest that surrounds ‘Flix’s Orange Is The New Black, their next offering – Bosch – just might.
Based on the best-selling novel series by author Michael Connelly, the show stars Titus Welliver (TV’s Lost, The Town) as LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, who operates in and around the Hollywood division. For the first season’s storyline Bosch undergoes a federal trial for the murder of a serial killer while trying to solve the murder of a 13-year old boy.
Some of the more recognisable names joining Welliver in front of the camera are Annie Wersching (The Last of Us), Lance Reddick (TV’s Fringe), Jamie Hector (TV’s The Wire) and Veronica Cartwright (Alien). None of the listed cast even make a brief appearance in this first trailer except for Welliver. Running at under a minute, it serves as an appetizer for the future season, unraveling a few hints at what Bosch will have to face. More importantly though, it establishes the jazzy tone and laidback cool of its protagonist – sounds just like the Bosch from the books.
In terms of story, Connelly’s popular stream of novels are perfect material for a police procedural; a sarcastic, good-hearted cop with unorthodox methods tangled up in the glitzy-yet-tainted world of Hollywood’s dangerous criminals. Luckily, the tone and pace of the books won’t be lost as Connelly is co-writing the series with The Wire‘s Eric Overmyer.
Bosch will be available to stream on Amazon Prime sometime in 2015.
