Harley Quinn
The Joker’s on/off girlfriend Harley Quinn has exploded in popularity over the past few decades, with the Clown Princess of Crime arguably being just as beloved as her supervillain significant other by modern audiences. It only makes sense, then, that the character is finally getting her own vehicle. And it’s an animated series, which brings Harley’s life full circle as she first debuted in the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series back in the 1990s.
Not that Harley Quinn will be an all-ages experience like BTAS, however. The show looks to be positioning the character as DC’s own version of Marvel’s Deadpool, with the animated series set to be an R-rated adult-oriented comedy. For a taste of the tone of the show, we know that one character’s backstory will involve them having gone viral for calling Wonder Woman the c-word.
This info comes from some character breakdowns for the series, which give us a pretty clear idea of the basic premise of Harley Quinn. It seems likely that it’ll feature Harley attempting to put herself at the top of the criminal food-chain in Gotham, after breaking up with the Joker.
She’ll form a crew of misfit villains made up of the likes of well known Batman antagonists such as Clayface, King Shark and her best gal pal, Poison Ivy. Lesser known comic book creations such as Sy Borgman, Malice Vundabar and Dr. Psycho will also star, while Mr. J seems to fill the role of the villain of the series, as he tries to stop Harley’s gang from stealing his crown.
There’s no casting news for the lead yet, but it’s been rumored that DC are seeking Margot Robbie to reprise her role. What we know so far sounds promising, then, though it’s worth mentioning that the series comes from the minds behind Powerless, DC’s embarrassingly unfunny first foray into the world of superhero comedy that was cancelled by NBC after only a handful of episodes.
