While it’s not the way I’d have chosen to see Robert Englund return to the iconic character of Freddy Krueger, given that it’s been 15 years since Freddy vs. Jason, I’ll take what I can get.
His upcoming return is set to happen on The Goldbergs‘ special Halloween episode entitled “Mr. Knifey-Hands,” and from what we understand, he’ll show up in a dream caused by the family renting the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, an encounter which the synopsis promises will “teach [Beverly] an important lesson about her son’s relationship with Jackie.”
Now, if you’ve checked out the video above you’ll have noticed a distinct lack of Freddy Krueger in it. While this is definitely disappointing, I guess there’s no point blowing the big reveal in a promo clip, right?
Admittedly, traditional American sitcoms definitely aren’t my thing, but I’m going to try my best to get through this episode of The Goldbergs as if we’re being honest, I’d wade through an ocean of crap jokes and bottom-of-the-barrel writing to get to just a couple of seconds of Englund/Krueger action.
Plus, the episode might well mark the final time the actor plays the character. After all, he’s 71-years-old, there are no Elm Street films currently in production (and that’s not for want of ideas) and the Jackie Earle Haley reboot didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Still, audiences have a long-time affection for the character, with his blink and you’ll miss it appearance in Ready Player One drawing quite a bit of hype when the first trailer for that hit the web.
Not to mention that horror’s big right now and with the new Halloween doing Michael Myers justice, isn’t it time to give Freddy Krueger another chance in the limelight?
