I get it. I understand that an NFL quarterback has to have that cocky bravado so everyone knows he’s, without question, “the man.” And I wouldn’t expect a professional athlete, when asked about his team’s chances, to give any response that’s less than glowing. But come on, did Rex Grossman really say that the Washington Redskins will win the NFC East.
Last year the Redskins were 6-10, tied for last place with the underachieving Dallas Cowboys. The New York Giants missed the playoffs with a 10-6 record, but had an identical record as the division champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Here’s Rex from his Comcast SportsNet interview, via ESPN:
“We’re fine being the sleepers right now.You know, we’re just waiting in the wings, ready to take over the NFC East.”
Sleepers? To me, a sleeper team is a team that’s shown flashes of competence, not a team with 2 playoff appearances since 2000 or a team that has had seven head coaches in the same time span.
“Nobody’s talking about us. That’s right where we want to be. You look at us from top to bottom out here, there’s a bunch of great players. And we don’t need people saying we’re the best right now, but when it’s all said and done, I really feel like this team’s gonna win the East.”
Can I be real? Nobody’s talking about your team because your team is bad.
I’m not buying the Eagles being a “Dream Team” like some others, but they will be a top NFC team that’s in the mix to win the Super Bowl. You can never count out the Giants (only 3 losing records since 2000), and the Cowboys are led by a head coach, Jason Garrett, that will hold them accountable.
The Washington Redskins winning the NFC East in 2011, doubtful. I’d be surprised if they matched last year’s win total.
