If you were expecting Colonel Rhodey to suit up as War Machine in Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion, don’t get your hopes up. It has been recently confirmed that despite this character’s appearance in episode two, this MCU Avenger won’t appear in his superhero gear in this Disney Plus series.

During the episode titled “Promises” last week, Rhodey told Nick Fury that he was fired and volunteered himself to the US Government to deliver the news. Does this mean that War Machine will be the featured Avenger for this Marvel series? Not quite.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Don Cheadle shared his thoughts on Rhodey’s latest role in the series and how, despite not being the show’s adversary, he will be a threat due to his commitment to “following the chain of command” as a military man. He left a question for fans to think about Rhodey’s future. Will he continue doing what he’s told or do things “outside the box”?

“Rhodey’s got a new role in this one. Our very first scene is Rhodey and Nick Fury locking horns. Rhodey isn’t an adversary, but he’s being more adversarial than they have been before. That’s always been Rhodey’s cross to bear. Is he going to stay within the confines of being a military man following the chain of command, or is he going outside the box?”

We have seen Rhodey “go outside the box” in previous Marvel titles. While he signed the Sokovia Accords during the events of Captain America: Civil War, he defied the government occasionally by refusing to arrest Steve Rogers. However, it is understandable if he doesn’t suit up since it was previously confirmed that Secret Invasion wouldn’t be a superhero show. So, don’t expect this show to pull in our favorite heroes to help Nick Fury stop this alien invasion.

Secret Invasion was promoted to steer away from the traditional MCU formula and be a spy thriller with political undertones. Only four more episodes remain until season one is over, with new episodes coming out every Wednesday. So, if you want to catch up, the first two episodes are available to stream on Disney Plus.
