The first song off of Yellow Claw‘s upcoming debut album, Blood For Mercy, has been receiving mixed reviews from the trap trio’s fanbase so far, as it features low-pitch vocals and a four-four beat resembling something we’d hear in deep house, which makes for a substantial departure from the group’s trademark sound.
While it’s not a poor effort by any means, the only remotely trap-y part of “Run Away” is the second bridge, when a syncopated beat punctuated by rattling 808s leads to the second peak. It’s certainly different from what we’re used to hearing from the group, but departures aren’t always necessarily a bad thing and in this case, I think it marks a refreshing change of pace for the boys, even if their fans aren’t totally on board with it just yet.
