Though this year’s show marked my seventh consecutive trip to Motor City Comic Con, it may very well go down as my most memorable. Sure, I’m still fatigued after trying to experience as many facets of the event as I could, but every moment and penny spent were 100% worth it.
These days, many who flock to conventions have their sights set on whatever celebrities may be on hand and, believe me, this effort delivered like never before – especially if you dig superheroes as I do. Not only were the 40th anniversary of Superman: The Movie observed and the life of Margot Kidder honored, but the current crop of DC TV shows were well represented.
In fact, the guys who paved the way for The CW’s present prime time lineup were there in full effect, those being Smallville‘s Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum. But if you wanted to meet the new guard, you could cruise over to Arrow‘s Stephen Amell and Kirk Acevedo, or shake the hands of Black Lightning‘s Cress Williams, China Ann McClain and Nafessa Williams. Now that’s a lot of power under one roof!
Speaking of which, I was able to chat with both Kirk Acevedo and Cress Williams about what’s to come onĀ each of their respective series, so you can look forward to reading exclusive interviews with both right here at We Got This Covered in the very near future. But if you need something to digest now, know that we already have panel coverage ready to go for Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum, as well as Stephen Amell.
Aside from all of that awesomeness, there were many other fan favorite actors and actresses with booths set up, including geek royalty such as Summer Glau (Firefly), Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), Val Kilmer (Batman Forever) and Will Friedle (Batman Beyond). I’d like to think there was somebody to appeal to anyone walking through the front doors.
When it came to the comic book side of things, there were more vendors than you could shake a replica of the Infinity Gauntlet at. Plus, all-star creators like Joe Prado (Superman), Frank Quitely (Batman & Robin), Babs Tarr (Batgirl) and Jae Lee (Before Watchmen) were all down for signing books.
In truth, I can’t say enough about this past weekend – I even experienced what it is to wait in line for a Stephen Amell photo op! And after reacquainting myself with the virtue that is patience, I’ll fondly look back at this with the intention of returning for my eighth go-round.
Special thanks go to featured cosplay guest Nicole Marie Jean for allowing us to capture shots of each of her incredible costumes worn across all three days, as well as some of our other favorites spotted around the showroom floor. Simply peruse the gallery above if you’d like a sample.
If you’re curious as to what the folks behind Motor City Comic Con will be able to pull off in 2019, know that they’ve secured the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan once again, this time for May 17-19. See you there!
