After a severe warning from New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Monday for her to mind her manners, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) arrived in the city to protest the arraignment of former President Donald Trump. The arraignment has been heavily publicized, with the day serving as just another potential campaign stop for the former president. Greene promised to turn up in the Big Apple to show her support and to lead calls for the end of Trump’s “political persecution.” She took to messenger service Telegram to lambast Adams to her 100,000 followers, saying that the New York Democrat was a “tool for the democrats to try to hijack the 2024 elections.”
The dead-eyed Georgian was poised to speak in front of a crowd of pro-Trump protestors, but the ocean of humanity that greeted her was significantly less red than Greene or the former president hoped it would be. While Greene exited her vehicle with a smile so manic it would put the Joker ill-at-ease, her puff and bluster was quickly realized for the front that it was. Throngs of New Yorkers, most of whom turned up just to harass the hateful woman, lined the sidewalks, streets, and benches of downtown Manhattan. In an instant, the Georgia native was smothered by a rage that New Yorkers have been honing for decades.
Though Greene arrived with a security detail and sporting some thick aviators that would make even the Terminator jealous, her appearance did little to quell the swelling anger in the audience. When the senator finally took the podium — bullhorn in hand — she was hardly audible over the throng. With screams of outrage all around, her no doubt ridiculous speech was drowned out by some choice insults fresh from the lips of incredibly noisy New Yorkers.
Calls for her to “go back to Georgia” and shouts about her treatment of trans children were some of the loudest bellows from the crowd. In true NYC fashion, the f-word was used liberally. “Blast her with da f**kin’ space lasers,” one member of the crowd can be heard shouting, referencing Greene’s believe that the 2018 California wildfires were caused by Jewish space lasers. Most members in the gathering kept it short and sweet simply screaming for Greene to, “Get the f*ck outta New York.”
Ahead of her appearance, New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) rhetorically asked Greene why she was even coming to the city in the first place. He answered his own question with, You’re here for politics. You’re here because you wanna be VP. You’re here for your own fundraising.” He finished with a disgusted, “You’re here for your own nonsense.”
“Go do your job, Marjorie Taylor Greene,” Bowman said, “You don’t need to be in New York talking that nonsense.”
Greene maintained her supremely smug look throughout the duration of her unintelligible speech until the anger in the crowd finally replaced it with the fear that trans children feel every day. As the crowd pressed in, Greene seemingly apprehended the severity of the situation and how little control she and her small entourage actually had. The boos grew louder and more numerous, punctuated by shouts of “you’re a Q-anon lunatic,” and “fascist clown obsessed with children’s genitals.” Greene hastened through the last of her hateful diatribe and decided she had overstayed her welcome.
Her small team of bodyguards shoved their way back through the crowd, ushering the congresswoman back into the safety of her vehicle. While the senator is technically right, no one did get hurt during yesterday’s kerfuffle, it’s by no means due to Greene herself. The protests consistently had a strong NYPD presence, with Mayor Adams ensuring a smooth and orderly outcome from what could have been a deadly situation. Adams deployed every police officer the city had available after Trump was indicted, and even provided police escorts for controversial figures like Greene. Marjorie Taylor Greene may have made it through the storm this time, but New Yorkers have taught the rest of us a valuable lesson. We can’t force these people to shut their ignorant mouths, but we can sure make it hard for them to get their message out.
