Currently in between work on the Christian Bale-led drama Knight of Cups and Weightless, esteemed filmmaker Terrence Malick has been quietly piecing together his ambitious space opus, Voyage of Time.

It’s a project that’s been simmering on the back-burner for nigh on three decades, but given its ambitious scope, it could well be worth the wait. Chronicling the beginning of the cosmos in all of their majestic and awe-inspiring glory, evidence that Voyage of Time was inching closer to a theatrical bow surfaced earlier this year, when a trio of still images – showcasing a photograph of a circular celestial nebula, a lizard’s eye and human eye all running in parallel – hinted at the themes coursing through the veins of Malick’s picture.

Now, we have confirmation that IMAX has pegged Voyage of Time for debut on October 7, 2016. Word comes by way of an official press release from the company (via /Film) confirming that Malick’s latest will be released across two distinct versions.

The first of which is a 40-minute IMAX version narrated by Brad Pitt – the same that’s been scheduled for a fall 2016 release – while the other, feature-length version of Voyage of Time features Cate Blanchett charting the vastness of space and our place amongst the stars. Described as a “celebration of the universe” Malick’s long-in-development event film aims to display “the whole of time, from its start to its final collapse. This film examines all that occurred to prepare the world that stands before us now: science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet.”

Voyage of Time will unveil its 40-minute documentary on October 7 of this year, followed swiftly by the Cate Blanchett-narrated feature film.
