Although the upcoming Jean Grey solo series has been the talk of the town for some time now, it hasn’t been until recently that we got a look inside the debut issue. Well, there was last week’s ResurrXion Spotlight Sampler (I’d say that was worth every penny if it hadn’t been a free book), but thankfully, Marvel didn’t wait too long afterward to release a more substantial preview.
Despite the interiors provided being unlettered, I hope we can all agree that Victor Ibanez did a phenomenal job, as did the others that lent cover art. And although having a slew of variants to choose from is certainly nothing new, True Believers may have a more difficult time than usual selecting which they want to bring home because each are so beautiful and vibrant. Plus, you have to admit that getting Marguerite Sauvage of DC Comics Bombshells fame to contribute one was quite the coup.
Stunning visuals aside, writer Dennis Hopeless looks to offer a compelling narrative, to say the least. Not only is this the character’s first solo title, but we also have the girl out of time element, in addition to the impending arrival of the Phoenix Force. This younger, chronologically displaced version of Jean is fully aware of the tragedy that befell her older self, and that makes the story all the more interesting.
For more information, be sure to check out the synopsis given below:
A vision. A premonition. A warning. The Phoenix is coming back to Earth. It could be tomorrow, it could be years from now. But it’s on its way. Determined to not succumb to the fate that befell her adult counterpart, Jean will fight the future and forge her own destiny. One problem – she’s not ready. Not even close. So, on a quest to save her own life, she’ll travel across the Marvel Universe, honing her gifts under the tutelage of the greatest heroes and teachers. Even that may not be enough. Can Jean ever hope to escape the Phoenix? Or is the cycle of death and rebirth doomed to repeat itself? The heat is on this May as Jean Grey sets out on a journey that will turn her world upside down.
Jean Grey #1 arrives in comic shops on May 3.
