Netflix just dropped a sneak peek at The Brothers Sun, an action show starring Best Actress Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh, marking one of her first projects since winning the award.

Let’s be clear about what a “first look” constitutes these days: It’s actually just two photos, but I guess that’s better than nothing? The first image features a seated Yeoh as Mama Sun being served tea by Chau Long, who plays Steve. Her character’s demeanor is so calm, she looks like she would poison someone and then watch Jeopardy!, so there’s that.

The other photo is a little more animated, showing off a still of an intense looking fight scene involving golf clubs. It shows Justin Chien as Charles fighting off a group of ne’er do wells at a driving range. He looks like he’s ready to party (with fists).

The show was initially announced in February of 2022, and it’s billed as an “Asian-American centric, Asian-American written, Asian-American directed show,” per What’s On Netflix. It was created by Brad Falchuk, who previously worked on American Horror Story and American Crime Story. Falchuk also acted as executive producer along with Byron Wu, who wrote a number of the show’s scripts.

The show centers around two Taiwanese brothers who are not on the best of terms. One is a college student named Bruce, and the other is a gangster in Taipei named Charles Sun. Charles is forced to relocate to Los Angeles to protect his mother after the brothers’ father is mysteriously killed, and Bruce is forced to get a crash course in gangstering. Here’s the synopsis:

“When the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad is shot by a mysterious assassin, his eldest son, legendary killer Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien) heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), and his naive younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li) — who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now. But as Taipei’s deadliest societies and a new rising faction go head-to-head for dominance — Charles, Bruce and their mother must heal the wounds caused by their separation and figure out what brotherhood and family truly mean before one of their countless enemies kills them all.”

Chen is known for roles in Two Sides: Unfaithful and Pool Boy. Netflix ordered eight episodes of the show and it has a TV-MA rating. There’s no release date for the show just yet, but it is expected to appear later this year on the streamer.
