Taylor Sheridan is opening up about everything from Kevin Costner‘s Yellowstone exit, his all-in attitude on projects and diving into the realm of passionate work realms and introducing Matthew McConaughey to the Yellowverse in what will eventually become a spinoff to the series that started it all.
Yes, Costner’s leaving Yellowstone has been all but cemented, and while Sheridan says they worked towards an end goal that satisfied everyone, it’s evident that this isn’t the initial way things were meant to unfold. Sheridan says that Cosnter was never going to be around for the entirety of the series, but just months ago, we were also told that we had at least two additional seasons on the horizon, so things can change in the blink of an eye.
A positive in all of the talk of ending and conclusions is that a spinoff is on the horizon, one that will feature a beloved actor with a delightful country twang: the one and only Matthew McConaughey.
In speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan calls McConaughey a natural fit for the Yellowstone realm, although the actor himself has yet to discuss any future Yellowverse involvement.
“He seems like a natural fit. We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do.'”
Sheridan is keeping mum about what McConaughey’s spinoff will center around, or what time frame he’ll enter the picture in, but he did say a few words that we were a little surprised to hear. His Yellowstone prequels all focus on different branches of the Dutton family tree, and while the rumor mill spinning points to a Yellowverse spinoff picking up the story of the current Dutton family, he might bring McConaughey into a separate tale altogether.
“My idea of a spinoff is the same as my idea of a prequel — read into that what you will.”
Call us naive if you must, but we’re still crossing our fingers for a realm in which Rip Wheeler and John Dutton work closely with whomever McConaughey will breathe life into in the Dutton family realm; in fact, we’re using shooting star wishes on it.
McConaughey has a natural cowboy-esque nature to him already; a Texas native, he embodies Southern charm and executes everything in his life with a passion as deep as his drawl. He’s a powerhouse both on-screen and in his personal life, and we can’t wait to see what he’ll bring to the Dutton realm when it happens.
If we have to say goodbye to Yellowstone, the only silver lining is that we’ll soon see McConaughey’s Yellowverse debut, which will undeniably be magical.
