Courtesy of San Diego’s Comic Con, an utterly thrilling, four-minute trailer has been unleashed for the return of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Featuring appearances by both new key players – The Governor and Michonne – we also get a reveal that has been three seasons in the making.
Those familiar with the conclusion of last season will remember that samurai sword-wielding, fan favourite Michonne (Danai Gurira) was revealed and she gets a full opportunity to showcase her walker-dispensing potency in this first trailer. Clearly she has made quick friends with our shell-shocked gang and is looking destined to have a solid stint on the series.
Also stunningly realized (in all its zombie-overrun glory) is The West Central Prison (which is also a comic book fan-favourite) and overall a prominent fixture of The Walking Dead series since it was revealed in Issue 13. Its importance comes due to its ties to the appearance of The Governor (David Morrissey), the main antagonist of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).
Morrissey gets even more of a showcase in this first look and is as coolly ominous as we could have hoped. The Governor is the leader of a group of survivors called the Woodbury and in the comics at least, leads an eventual assault of the prison.
After the rolling green fields of season two, the grungy prison setting is a jarring change of scenery, with the whole production having descending further into horror movie territory than ever before. The moodiness may have increased but its clear from this gory trailer that the zombie-slaughtering is just consistent as ever.
And that reveal I mentioned? Well just wait into the last scene of the trailer for a very welcome surprise.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC this October.
