After spending twelve weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100, The Chainsmokers‘ smash hit “Closer” with Halsey has finally lost its stronghold over the charts. Originally released back in July, the song was catapulted to the number one spot in August where it held an impressive dominance of the charts until now, thanks to a certain viral video.
By now, you’ve probably heard of the mannequin challenge. It’s the latest viral trend sweeping the internet, and the basic premise involves getting a group of friends to pose perfectly still in order to give the impression that they’re mannequins. Thanks to the use of Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” as the meme’s official soundtrack, the song has been thrust into the spotlight and was finally able to overtake “Closer” in popularity.
While The Chainsmokers‘ may have been eclipsed by the mannequin challenge, their run with “Closer” has been notable to say the least. The single became something of a dance trend in its own right, and will certainly be remembered as one of the biggest songs of the year.
