When a young mother escapes an abusive relationship with her toddler in tow, a series of heartwarming, wrenching, and impossible-to-fathom circumstances soon follow in Netflix’s emotional drama Maid. The series first premiered almost two years ago and has quickly risen to the top 10 of Netflix once again in the last week.

In a Tweet shared by Netflix, the emotionally charged series got a shout-out as it rose to number 8 in the week’s English TV list, and with good reason. It’s a show that highlights the depths of the most authentic and genuine love and just how far one will go to protect the sacred bond between mother and child.

Starring Margaret Qualley, Anika Noni Rose, Nick Robinson, and Andie MacDowell, the story being crafted is one of tragedy and triumph and a heartbreaking look at what hoops must sometimes be jumped through when it comes to government assistance, housing, and the desire to be a parent when the odds are stacked against you.

While the escape from an abusive relationship and becoming a single parent isn’t something many hope to relate to, the struggles seen within Maid aren’t unheard of to much of the public today. Qualley plays a relatable and easy-to-love character named Alex as Robinson breathes life into her alcoholic and abusive ex-boyfriend, Sean, and in flashbacks, it’s obvious how the pair were drawn to one another in the first place, but the more obvious despair that lingers over her is a painful reminder that love isn’t enough, especially when so much pain exists in the same space.

There’s something otherworldly about becoming a parent, and that is the central idea and forward-driving momentum of Maid, a series that’ll grip you from the first episode, taking you down an emotionally painful and intense ride with each additional moment. From May 22 to May 28, Maid was watched for over 13 million hours and has now spent 14 weeks in the Netflix top ten.

You can stream the limited series on Netflix now, and you’ll want to grab tissues before you sit down to tune in; with well-acted characters and a gripping storyline, you absolutely can’t miss it.
