10 Fantastic Superheroes From The Future

For a genre that continually reboots itself to retain the status quo, superhero comics sure do spend a lot of time wondering what will happen to their characters down the road. Visiting an alternate vision of the timeline or some dark – sometimes it’s good, but mostly not - future is a favourite pastime of many comic books. Naturally, then, a heap of superheroes who are citizens of centuries into the future have been created over the years, usually finding their way back into the past - er, present - to meet up with the original heroes that inspired them.

The grandson of Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen, Bart Allen inherited his granddad’s speed powers – but they turned out to be a curse. Bart suffered from a hyper-accelerated metabolism which caused him to age far quicker than the average human – for instance, he was physically twelve years old but chronologically only two.

Thankfully, he was sent back in time where the Flash AKA Wally West – his cousin – helped set his metabolism back to normal. Now based in the present, he becomes the superhero Impulse – so named because of his impulsive personality – and later Kid Flash. He even briefly assumed the identity of the Flash, after Wally West died.

Bart might not have the history of other Flashes like Jay Garrick, Barry Allen and Wally, but his position as the fourth version of the Flash still earns him a lot of brownie points. Bart’s iteration of the character was also the one introduced in TV’s Smallville, where he was played by Kyle Gallner.
